MERRILLVILLE - The popular Japanese restaurant in Schererville featuring chefs who entertain while cooking in front of guests is planning to expand to Merrillville.
The owners of Schererville-based House of Kobe bought the high-profile former Shakey’s building on Broadway south of U.S. 30 on Wednesday. They plan to open another House of Kobe restaurant in December.
The Schererville location will remain open. And if the Merrillville restaurant is a success, officials might expand to Orland Park, Ill., manager Jerry Chiang said.
Since the new site is such a central location, restaurant officials hope to appeal to the local business crowd, Chiang said.
Being near the Interstate 65/U.S. 30 corridor and the Star Plaza Theatre, the new restaurant also hopes to attract a tourist crowd.
Chiang said he hopes the new location will make the restaurant more convenient for current customers.
“Now customers coming from Valparaiso can go to Merrillville and people coming from Munster can continue to come to the one in Schererville, “ he said.
Like the restaurant in Schererville, the new one will feature tappanyaki stations, where chefs cut and cook food in front of customers.
Michael Lunn, a broker with Merrillville-based Commercial In-Sites who helped close the deal, said the new restaurant is expected to include 14 stations compared with Schererville’s six.
“The plans are fantastic,” Lunn said, noting there will be a fountain and garden area inside the building.
The restaurant, to be about 7,000 square feet, is known for its entertaining atmosphere. “(The chefs) don’t just cook the food, they entertain you at the same time,” he said. “They joke around with you, juggle food and throw stuff with the knives.”
